Solar PV

Solar pv generates electricity from sunlight.   It is calculated that 50% of the energy produced will be used in the home, and 50% will be exported.  Of course the “free” electricity also results in lower annual electricity bills.

About Us

At energywise-wales our staff have many years of experience in heating and renewable energy which we put to good use helping you choose the best solutions for your home or business.  Fully qualified professionals will guide you through the minefield of acronyms, RHI’s, EPC, and Fits.  Our aim is to help you understand not only what is on offer but what is suitable for your circumstances.  With this information we hope to be able to help you can make an informed choice.

We understand that with so many products on offer it is virtually impossible for customers to know which to choose.  It is for this reason that energywise-wales has carried out our own in-depth research on your behalf and are proud to offer what we believe are quality products by manufacturers who have proved their reliability over many years.  Windhager, Stiebel-Eltron, Mitsubishi, Daikin, Panasonic, Fronius, SMA, to name but a few.

Our aim is to match the quality of the products offered with the quality of our workmanship and service, from design to installation.

Home owners, architects, builders, retrofit to newbuild, energywise-wales has provided solutions throughout the industry at various levels.  Both we and our products are MCS accredited ensuring high standards and eligibility for RHI and Fits payments.

With a long established background in heating systems, and our extensive knowledge of renewable solutions and government schemes, energywise-wales can help you make the right choice.

This process can start with a simple phone call.  A fully qualified engineer (not a sales rep) will visit your home to discuss options and obtain relevant information for a more detailed heat loss calculation.  At this stage we can provide an EPC assessment which will enable an accurate Renewable Heat Incentive prediction to made.

At energywise-wales we pride ourselves in offering a good “old-fashioned” service – quality products, installed by qualified experienced engineers backed up by friendly competent staff.

Biomass

Windhager biomassBiomass heating uses logs, pellets or wood chips to fuel a boiler which provides central heating and/or hot water to homes or businesses.  The most popular biomass boilers are fuelled with pellets which are specially produced to provide the most efficient results.

These boilers can produce a heating temperature of up to 80oC which makes them ideal for large difficult to heat homes and businesses which do not have a mains gas supply.

Points to bear in mind when considering biomass:

  • Space for the biomass boiler – minimum 1.5m2
  • Ability to site a flue to outside
  • Space for pellet storage – either in bags or from a hopper
  • Space for delivery lorry to manoeuvre if delivered in bulk

biomass2The biomass boiler is eligible for RHI payments.  After an EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) is produced for your home we can advise you of the possible RHI payments which you will receive over the next 7 years.  Business RHI rates are paid for 20 years.

Energywise-wales has partnered with Windhager of Austria.  With over 90 years experience, Windhager has a proven track record as a leading manufacturer of quality reliable products.  Their UK office has been operational since 2005 and is sited near Bristol offering customer support and backup which we believe provides peace of mind to both the installer and the end user.

HEAT PUMPS – air or ground source

Air Source Heat pumpsStiebel Eltron Heat Pump
This heating system can deliver hot water to either the central heating system and/or hot water cylinder.  The heat pump works like a refrigerator in reverse, it takes heat out of the air and transfers this to the heating circuit.

The efficiency of the system is determined by the temperature required for your radiators or underfloor heating system.  The lower the temperature the more efficient the system.  This is a very important factor in heat pump design as RHI payments are higher for lower temperatures.  However this temperature is determined by the size of your radiators and how well insulated your individual rooms are.

Mitsubishi Heat Pump
Heat pumps work very well with underfloor heating, but they can also offer a good solution for homes off mains gas with a radiator system.  It will probably be necessary though to upgrade some of your radiators and you will require a new heat pump compliant hot water cylinder.

Heat pumps are best used for new build properties or well insulated renovations.

Energywise-wales will help you to select the right type of pump for your individual situation, or if this type of system is not suitable we will tell you.

Ground source heat pumps

There is a constant temperature in the ground beyond 750mm in depth, and it is this heat which the ground source system is designed to extract and put into your central heating system.  It works in a similar way to the air source system – once the low temperature heat had been collected, it is compressed in order to harvest usable heat in the heating circuit.   Like the air source system it works best with low temperature underfloor heating systems, or extra large radiators.  However whilst the ground system is slightly more efficient than the air source, it more expensive to install as either bore holes or pipes have to be buried in the ground to collect the heat.

Water to water heat pumps

Heat pump loops can be submerged in water – again heat is extracted.  Excellent efficiencies are achieved using water as a source of heat, in some cases SPF has been recorded at 6 or more.  If you would like to find out more, please contact us for details.

Solar PV

Solar pv generates electricity from sunlight.  An inverter is used to convert this electricity to AC suitable for use in the home or business.  The UK Government operates a scheme known as Fits – Feed In Tariff Scheme where every kilowatt of energy your system produces is paid for.  In addition home owners are paid a further amount for electricity export (energy produced but not used in the home).  It is calculated that 50% of the energy produced will be used in the home, and 50% will be exported.  Of course the “free” electricity also results in lower annual electricity bills.

There are many different type of panels and inverters on the market.  As with all other products offered by energywise-wales, we ensure the use of quality products by reliable manufacturers.  We can provide a range of different systems to suit individual budgets and site requirements and whether the system is fitted in or on the roof.

An example of one of our many partner companies is British manufacturer – Viridian Solar

Solar Thermal

These highly efficient panels collect heat from the sun’s radiation which is transferred to the hot water cylinder.  Throughout the year it is anticipated that up to 70% of hot water requirements can be obtained this way, with summer months producing up to 90%.

Usually 2 solar thermal panels are installed on the roof in preferably a southerly aspect with minimal shading.  A new domestic hot water cylinder will also be required which has connections for both the solar and the existing boiler or heat pump.

Underfloor heating

A clear choice for all new build properties and in some cases this can be added to existing buildings.  Underfloor heating is an excellent partner with heat pumps as it requires a low flow temperature to operate efficiently.  This can result in much higher efficiencies for your renewable heating system, lower running costs and ultimately a better payment from the RHI.  However, please do consult with us prior to design as efficiencies are determined by the final floor coverings amongst other factors.

We would strongly recommend that where possible the same installer should be responsible for the full heating system ie the hot water cylinder, the heat emitters, the heat source.  From our experience it results in a fully integrated system designed to operate to the highest efficiency.

Mechanical Ventilation & Heat Recovery

MVHR is ideal for new build properties.  As Building Regulations (Part F) drive new build properties towards greater air tightness to reduce heat loss and increase energy efficiencies, these air tight properties need a means of introducing fresh air without causing cold draughts, excessive noise or condensation.

Mechanical ventilation combined with heat recovery maintains comfortable, healthy living environments.  Stale air is ducted from wet rooms (kitchens and bathrooms) to remove odours and excessive humidity.  Fresh cooler air is drawn into the property and pre-warmed via the heat exchanger by the air being extracted.

The benefits of MVHR include:

Fresh filtered air; improved SAP ratings; warm well ventilated comfortable home – up to 95% of waste heat is recovered; excess moisture condensation and mould growth avoided, odours and airborne allergens removed; outside noise pollution reduced; overall improvement in health.
